The Canary Islands

In this, the first issue, we focus on The Canary Islands with articles on Fuerteventura (the longest and closest to Africa,)  volcanic Lanzarote and  festive Tenerife. These are just three of the seven major islands of the Canaries,  where the climate is one of the best in the world. The average temperature now is  22°c, and rises to 27-26°c, in Aug/Sept.     Some take the view that the mountains of the Canaries along with those of the Azores and Cape Verde are the highest peaks of the fabled lost continent of Atlantas. Others just see the islands as  a great place to escape the chill of winter.

If you can leave at short notice, there some great package holidays bargains to be had.

"Christmas comes but TWICE  a year" if you visit Tenerife in the Canaries  for   THE FESTIVAL OF THE THREE KINGS

"Water makes you sick but wine makes you sing"
in
BON APPETITE we can whet the palette or set it on fire

Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldren trained  in
 LANZAROTE
before
the Moon Landing and
the locals call it
'The Bad Lands' because nothing  grows in the dead tortured rocky surface.

Islands at the End of the World

edgeils.jpg (105437 bytes)Before the Americas were colonized, the world seemed pretty flat and setting out from  the Canary  Islands there appeared a real  risk of sailing off the edge.

On  Lanzarote, amid the extinct volcanoes,
the big attraction  is Mount Timanfaya the
'fire mountain' where geysers spew steam and there is enough heat below your feet to roast a pig for lunch.

Fuerteventura
gets its name from
'Fort Adventure.'    It looks barren
and desolate but with year round
sunshine and  a hundred and fifty
beaches  it's  hardly surprising that
the pace of tourist development is hotting up...............
The advice is   go now!

We also visit Tenerife where the Christmas spirit lingers with the January 'Festival of the Three Kings
