GO DUTCH FOR THE YEAR OF THE WINDMILLS

The first polder windmill was built in 1407, exactly 600 years ago. To mark this special occasion, 2007 has been designated the Year of the Windmill. A whole host of festivities have already taken place, but plenty more are scheduled for the rest of the year.
For example, why not visit Rotterdam to see a demonstration of traditional snuff manufacturing and spice milling, or Schiedam to discover more about what it was like to live and work in a windmill? Millers recount stories of what is truly a by-gone era in De Babbersmolen. Nieuwerbrug, meanwhile, is home to a fully functional windmill, known as De Weijpoortsche Molen. This centuries-old, imposing windmill operates once a week, and is well worth a visit.
For more about these and other activities, please visit http://www.jaarvandemolens.nl.

THE GREAT RIVER JOURNEY -
THE FIRST OF ITS KIND IN NORTH AMERICA!
An exciting new river cruise has been added to Canadian Sky’s portfolio. The first of its kind in North America, The Great River Journey combines a unique cruise on the Yukon River with luxury lodge accommodation, offering an insight into the famous Klondike gold rush and paddle-wheeler eras.

A collaboration of four First Nations, The Great River Journey has unique access to many cultural activities, people and sites. Small groups will travel in their own 38ft riverboat with a pilot and an experienced local guide, taking in Northern Canada’s most spectacular scenery. Travelling 350 miles through the heart of the Yukon wilderness, it passes through the beautiful ‘Thirty Mile’ section of the legendary Yukon River.

Famous for its twisting canyons, swift waters and ever-shifting sand bars, the Thirty Mile stretch was a constant challenge for the captains of the historic paddle-wheelers who plied the Yukon following the Klondike gold rush in 1897. Consequently, many ships were wrecked on its shoals and rocks, of which some remnants are still visible.

Guests can view these wrecks en-route and may spot wildlife such as muskrat, beaver, coyote, mink, bald and golden eagle, and black and rare grizzly bear as well as visit many of the historical attractions and abandoned settlements of the gold rush era.

The riverboats have specially designed hulls so that they handle well in both rivers and lakes. A carpeted passenger area includes 10 comfortable reclining seats with excellent leg room and a see-through tinted lexan dome for air circulation and photo opportunities.

Accommodation is provided in small, private, remotely situated lodge facilities, Upper Labarge Lodge at Lake Laberge, Homestead Lodge at Pelly Farm and Wilderness Outpost at Coffee Creek, in addition to heritage accommodation in Dawson City. Each designed and themed to harmonize with and accentuate the unique wilderness and historical aspects of the surrounding area.

The nine-night cruise costs from £4,599 per person. Valid for departures from 1 June 2008, the price includes scheduled flights from London Heathrow, resort transfers, experienced guides and accommodation on a full board basis in various lodges. A one-hour floatplane excursion over the Yukon River is also included. For further information contact (http://www.canadiansky.co.uk / 0870 904 0930)

NORTHERN LIGHTS STEAL THE SHOW
IN BC’S NORTH
:
For an illuminated showcase of what Mother Nature is truly capable of, point your compass north…waaay north. While BC houses a bounty of settings rife for the avid outdoorsman, and plenty of out-of-doors play for all, one should not forgo the opportunity to simply sit back and take in the wonder of their locale’s natural surrounds. And at Northern Rockies Lodge, situated on the shores of Muncho Lake in the northernmost peaks of the Rocky Mountains, just such an opportunity is at its zenith from now until October…showing nightly. Keep in mind, however, that there’s much more beyond the luminosity, thanks to the diversity of wildlife that make their home in the province’s largest provincial park and protected area, the nearby Muskwa Kechika. Moose, Stone sheep, buffalo and even mountain goats are housed here in their natural habitat. And nearby Liard Hot Spring (just a short jaunt north) offers up an outing to unwind in yet another natural setting. Guests can indulge in the fall flavours from the lodge’s Outpost Cabin, or take on a multi-day “Safari” package to Virginia Falls in Nahanni National Park or Wokkpash Provincial Park – featuring some hearty hiking and fabulous opportunities to spot a critter or two. And further into the flurry-filled months, vantages to view wildlife and simply take it all in are available from the property’s main lodge. For now, the resort’s comfy setting along the shores of Muncho Lake sets the scene for lounging amid an aurora borealis-induced glow. Settle in for the show…and look to the skies. http://www.northern-rockies-lodge.com

SPEND IT BRITS” STORE 170 MILLIONS OF POUNDS WORTH OF FOREIGN CURRENCY IN THEIR DRAWERS

A staggering 170 millions of pounds worth of foreign currency lies dormant in people’s drawers across the country, according to a recent survey carried out by online travel and leisure giant lastminute.com.

With more Britons than ever taking several breaks a year, it would seem many are now choosing to hang on to their currency rather than exchange it upon their return. This not only means they have spending money to hand, but also saves them paying the often pricey exchange rates and commissions.

An amazing four out of ten people polled told lastminute.com they have up to £35 in Euros lying at the bottom of their sock drawer, whilst 11% revealed they had more than £35 worth of Euros. However, the weakness of the dollar means that holiday makers are not hanging on to them as much, with only 11% surveyed hanging on to between 1 and 50 dollars and 14% keeping more than fifty dollars. Almost 20% of lastminute.com’s customers also collect other lesser used currencies such as the Moroccan Dirham and the Thai Baht as these are also considered as souvenirs.
